My Pantry Dream Board

Have you ever made a trip to the grocery store, only to realize that the exact item you went to pick up was already in your pantry? I’m not going to lie, this happens to me all the time because I lack a proper pantry organization system. This means I waste money on items that I don’t need (SO frustrating!) and have to throw out expired food (SO wasteful!). When it comes to my new house, I can’t wait to make my new kitchen and pantry a well thought out and ORGANIZED space. Part of this planning process has been using dream boards to map out what I want these spaces to look like, and how I envision them functioning. Today on Sweet and Saving I’m excited to share my pantry dream board, inspired by Wayfair, to help keep me organized and keep track of my pantry inventory. I hope this blog inspires you during your own spring cleaning!

Dry Food

For pasta, rice, quinoa, couscous, flour, sugar, cereal and any other dry cooking or baking items, I will be utilizing clear, glass kitchen canisters. While I absolutely love pops of colour in my kitchen, clear glass containers help me to easily see what ingredients I have sitting in my inventory so I can clearly identify when/what items need to be topped up.

Food and Beverage Cans

If there is one thing I always lose track of it’s my cans, whether it’s soup, sauce, or soda. My cans easily get pushed to the back of the pantry and before you know it I’ve made multiple purchases of the same cans that have been sitting in my pantry for months. To fix this problem, I will be investing in a can organizer (which isn’t that much of an investment!). This will ensure that I can visibly identify my can inventory. I will also be using the FIFO (first in, first out) system meaning that cans with the closest expiry date will be used up first, where as newer cans will be stored towards the back of the organizer to prevent being wasteful and trashing any unused cans that have expired.

Spices

Sugar, Spice, and Everything NOT Nice…my current spice situation is a total embarrassment! I can’t even begin to tell you how many bags of chilli powder I own. Well…my new pantry system will certainly fix this problem. I will again be using clear, glass spice jars so I can see when something needs to be re-filled. I will also purchase a spice rack (finally!) that will allow me to easily access all my spices without having to sort through bags and bags of partially used spices.

Bottles

While I’m not much of a soda drinker, I LOVE my soda water. I tend to buy it in bulk (thanks Costco) which currently just ends up on the floor of the pantry. I was having trouble looking for a proper storage unit for my bottles until EURIKA! I came across this perfect solution to help me stay organized and use the space in my pantry wisely (love how these are stackable!).

Snack Foods

Growing up we always seemed to be out of granola bars. Why? Because my siblings and I often left empty granola bar boxes in the cupboard which left my mom thinking that we had tons of snacks in stock. Fast forward a few years, and this still seems to be the issue in my house. My new system will include emptying all the granola bars and other snack foods from their boxes into an open basket making these delicious snacks easily accessible yet visible, so we avoid being under stocked on our favorite lunch treats. I particularly love this storage container because you can separate your healthy “adult” snacks from your kid’s snacks.

Food Container Storage

Is there anything MORE frustrating than not being able to find the matching lid to your Tupperware? For some reason, my Tupperware drawer is always a disaster which leads to temper tantrums because my patience for figuring out the Tupperware drawer jigsaw puzzle has worn thin. So, what’s my fix? This amazing Food Container Storage Organizer, which I can’t wait to get my hands on!

Food Wrap

Plastic wrap, tin foil, parchment paper, the bulk of food wrap quickly takes up a lot of valuable kitchen drawer space, which is why this food wrap organizer made it onto my pantry dream board. This organizer is a better use of space and is so much tidier.

 Shopping Bags

Who else is a shopping bag hoarder? I honestly try to use re-usable bags but I admit, this is an area where I am super forgetful. This forgetfulness has led to a plethora of plastic bags lying on the pantry floor because I feel too guilty throwing them out. It’s about time that I purchase a grocery bag storage unit which will no doubt be well utilized.

How To Make Your Wardrobe Go Further: The Denim Jacket

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for clothes, fashion, and all things pretty. In fact, my colleagues often comment on how they rarely see my in the same outfit twice. But the truth is, you don’t need a closet full of clothes to look like you have an abundant wardrobe. My goal? To show you how to make your wardrobe go further so you can spend less money and time at the mall (or online!). Today I am going to focus on a closet staple: The Denim Jacket.

If you don’t have a denim jacket. You need to get one…NOW! Denim jackets 1. Never go out of style. 2. Easily dress up or down any outfit. 3. Go with pretty much everything.  I’ve linked my favorite denim jackets for every price point at the bottom of this blog post.

Dress Up Your Activewear

Who else refuses to wear jeans on the weekend? Leggings are my go-to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. To take my leggings from drab to fab, I pair my cozy leggings with my denim jacket to add some “chic” to this weekend look.

Dress Down

Denim jackets are like magic when it comes to dresses. They match any dress style or length. Swap out your cardigan for your denim jacket for a more dressed down look. And yes, I know my legs are super white, I wear my porcelain skin loud and proud.

The Canadian Tuxedo

You laugh, but the Canadian Tuxedo is totally underrated! Pairing your favorite denim jacket with a great fitting pair of jeans is a versatile look that can be easily switched from a perfect patio afternoon spent with the girls to date night with your hubby, just by exchanging your basic tee for a pretty cami.

White Pants for a Classic Look

There is nothing that goes better with white pants (another closet staple) than a denim jacket. It is my spring/summer go-to for pretty much any casual occasion. No matter what shirt you pair with this dynamite combo, you will always leave the house looking chic and on-point.

Be Bold

Bold colored pants are fun and eye catching, but I often wonder if I’m attracting the wrong kind of attention. That’s why I love the denim jacket. It effortlessly tones down bright colored pants preventing my outfit from being an eyesore.

Black on Black

As much as I love pink and all bright colors, there is something about black that I just love. To me black is elegant, slimming, and never goes out of style. For an easy date night or GNO outfit, pair your favorite black top with your most flattering black pants and add pops of color with accessories and clutch.

Discovering Essential Oils

Hi! My name is Alix Martin. I am honored to be here as a guest blogger! I want to share three ways I have used dōTERRA essential oils to drastically change my life. But first, three things you need to know about me:

  1. In my family I am significantly outnumbered. I have an amazing husband and two beautiful little boys, even the dog is a boy! My life is wrestling, farts and hockey, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
  2. I love Jesus and my church family!
  3. I love food, but mainly pizza and chocolate.

img_6812

When I was pregnant with my youngest I was introduced to dōTERRA essential oils because I was struggling with sleep anxiety and needed a natural solution. I was shocked when they worked better than any sleep medication I had taken. I needed to know more! What else could these oils do in my life? Fast forward 18 months and dōTERRA essential oils and supplements are in every part of my life.

First, what is an essential oil? Essential oils are aromatic compounds derived from plants. They act as protective mechanisms, to keep the plants healthy and strong. Since our chemical makeup is similar to plants we can similarly use the oils to protect our system. Beware though, the essential oil industry is not regulated, and many oils claim to be pure, but are filled with synthetics. dōTERRA essential oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade and are actually 100% pure, so you can use them aromatically, topically and almost all can be used internally. They are also sourced from around the world, so you know you are getting the most potent and strong oils out there. Find out more HERE.

I want to share three simple ways I use these oils every day:

  • SLEEP: Before dōTERRA, I was desperate for restful sleep! I couldn’t find anything that helped ease my sleep anxiety and calm my brain! Enter Serenity, our Restful Blend. This beautiful combination of relaxing oils helps me unwind and relax as I am falling asleep. I apply one drop of Serenity oil to the bottom of my feet and the back of my spine and add a couple drops in my diffuser to help me drift off into beautiful sleep.
  • IMMUNITY: My family has barely been sick in the past 18 months, despite having two germy kids who attend daycare. I give thanks to OnGuard, our Protective Blend, which is known for its immunity boosting and antiseptic properties. I apply this oil diluted with fractionated Coconut oil topically every day on my kids and I take it internally to naturally protect us from seasonal threats!
  • ENERGY: Wild Orange & Peppermint is my favourite combination for an energy boost any time of day! I apply a drop in each hand, rub my hands together and smell in the sweet, strong and uplifting aroma to wake up my senses. This is perfect first thing in the morning, before a workout, before an important meeting or presentation or just because you need more energy!

I could easily list 25 ways I use essential oils every day in my life, but to avoid writing a novel of a blog post, I will stop at three. If you are interested in learning more, check out my website, or  follow my oiling journey on Facebook or Instagram.  I am on a mission to bring natural health and wellness to families around the world, so I would love to connect with you to hear your story and your health goals!

Blessings,

Selecting Cleaners For Your Home Part 3: Green Clean Killing Machines

If your from Canada, you KNOW how long, cold, and wet this winter has been. This week we welcomed the first day of Spring (FINALLY!), and I could not be more ready! There is something about the warmer air and sunshine that makes me want to get a head start on my spring cleaning. And with Earth Day just around the corner, I find myself taking extra care selecting products for my home that are not only safe for me, but safe for the planet. Today on Sweet and Saving, I’m sharing what to look for on your product label to prevent you from being fooled by “green” marketing language, plus I’ll be adding some germy items in your home to  add your cleaning list that you’ve likely never thought to clean before.

2b2c2f3b-551d-4c1b-80a1-3e69beb6f1f4

Green Certification

Green, all natural, biodegradable, and plant based, are all terms that are frequently used on cleaning products to make consumers think that they are safe for the planet. But don’t be misled by these green logos and claims. Product environmental preferability claims should be validated by credible THIRD party certifications that have been designed to ensure strict standards are followed in the formulation of cleaning and disinfectant products. Did you know that there are both industry and government requirements to be labeled a “green” product? If you want to put your mind at ease, look for these following third party certified green logos.

Green Chemistries

While Green certifications really are your gold standard for selecting environmentally friendly products, these products may be challenging to come across at your local Walmart or Target. Due diligence can be done just by selecting chemistries that are known to be readily or inherently biodegradable and are gentle on the planet, the place we all call home. Look for products with hydrogen peroxide, citric acid, or lactic acid as the active ingredient, which can always be found on a disinfectant’s product label. You will also want to avoid products with ingredients that are harsh on the planet like QUATS (Quaternary ammonium compounds), phosphates, and triclosan.

Green Claims

Remember the relevant green marketing claims that I talked about in Part 2? Look for cleaners and disinfectants that claim to be readily or inherently biodegradable. So what is the difference between readily and inherently biodegradable? Readily biodegradable means a product has been proven to degrade  into its natural state when subjected to sunlight, water and microbial activity, from 60-100% in 28 days. Inherently biodegradable means that a product has been proven to degrade into its natural state when subjected to sunlight, water, and microbial activity from 20% to 60% in 28 days. Other GOOD marketing claims to look for are phenol free, VOC free, and phosphate free.

VOCs

What the heck is a VOC? Volatile Organic Compounds, otherwise known as VOCs, are products that have a high vapor pressure at room temperature. In other words, VOCs quickly evaporate into the environment leading to indoor air pollution which can also be toxic to your health. Common VOC culprits in cleaning products are fragrances and alcohol (i.e. glass cleaners). Instead, opt for unscented cleaning products. Personally, I use glass cleaners with alcohol (I find they work the best), but to reduce irritation the best method to apply is by spraying the product onto a cloth and then apply to the surface. This reduces aerosolization which can cause respiratory irritation.

Germy Items in Your Home to Add to your Spring Cleaning List

When it comes to cleaning our homes, I’m sure we all get to the basics on a regular basis (bathroom, kitchen, fridge, etc). But, did you know there are some items in your home that are more germy that the toilet, some places that I bet you’ve never cleaned? These are high touch items, meaning that you touch them on a regular basis providing the perfect breeding ground for germs to travel and spread. Next time you give your house a good clean don’t forget to clean and disinfect you:

  • Cell phone
  • Telephone
  • TV remote
  • Light switches (especially during cold and flu season)
  • Door knobs/handles
  • Computer mouse

Happy spring cleaning!

5 Nutrition Myths You Should Stop Believing Right Now

Hi everyone, I am so excited to be a guest blogger on Sweet and Saving! My name is Megan Kuikman and I am a Registered Dietitian. As a Registered Dietitian, I come across nutrition myths on a daily basis. Thanks to social media and so-called experts in nutrition, these myths travel like rapid fire. Read on for the top 5 nutrition myths that I come across:

1. Carbs make you fat

When calorie intake is the same, weight loss can be achieved on either a high carbohydrate or low carbohydrate diet. Excess calories lead to weight gain regardless if the excess calories come from carbohydrates, protein, fat, or alcohol. There is no reason to avoid good sources of carbohydrates such as fruit, whole grain breads, pasta, potatoes and milk products. Carbohydrates are an importance source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals and are critical for brain function.

2. Honey and maple syrup are better than table sugar since they’re natural

Nutritionally, honey, maple syrup and sugar are all the same. Honey contains 64 calories/tablespoon and maple syrup 52 calories/tablespoon compared with 49 calories/tablespoon in table sugar. All are concentrated sources of calories with few added vitamins and minerals. Just because something is made with maple syrup or honey does not mean it’s a better choice. Choose whatever sweetener you find tastes best, and enjoy it in moderation.

3. You need to take a vitamin or mineral supplement

Taking a vitamin or mineral in an isolated supplement is not as healthful as getting them naturally from food. This is because vitamins and minerals work together to create a larger health benefit than they can make on their own. Many health boosters have also not been fully identified and can’t be reproduced in pill form. Taking a supplement can also be dangerous since high doses can be toxic or create a deficiency in another nutrient. There are of course some exceptions such as correcting a nutrient deficiency, a vitamin D supplement during the winter, or special population groups.

4. Protein shakes are necessary after a hard workout

While protein is important after a hard workout to help repair damaged muscle, protein needs can easily be met through foods alone such as yogurt, milk, meat, legumes, and nuts. Protein is also not the only important nutrition post-workout. Carbohydrates are of equal value. Most protein shakes do not contain carbohydrates. If you do choose a protein shake post-workout, be sure to pair it with a carbohydrate rich food such as a piece of fruit or bagel.

5. If Dr. Oz said it then it must be true

Be careful where you get your nutrition advice. There are a lot of so called “experts” in nutrition who are not providing evidence based nutrition advice. Remember a nutritionist is not the same as a Registered Dietitian. The designation “Registered Dietitian” in Canada is a regulated and protected title. This ensures that the advice and information they provide is sound.

Introducing the Organization Series!

Hey You!

It is an honor to be a guest on Sweet & Saving sharing my thoughts on a topic I am passionate about: organizing!

My name is Julia Duiella. It is pronounced do-yel-la although most people just rhyme the two names saying, Julia Doolia, before proceeding to ask if I’ve seen the Wedding Singer. Either way suits me just fine, and yes, I have seen it.

Olivia and I have known eachother for 18 years now. She has always encouraged me, often being the push I needed to jump off the edge of laziness. She has supported me through all my career endeavours and was the first bride to hire me to coordinate their wedding! Olivia and I have a lot in common, from music to marketing, food, and faith, we are homebodies who love communicating through blogging.

Passionate about organizing. Really? That’s what your passionate about? Yeah, actually, it is! Although I don’t have it all together and there’s a pile of ‘stuff’ in my space, organization is something that constantly grabs my attention. I love how manipulative organization is. Companies, families, schedules and physical spaces are greatly influenced by the way they are organized. As humans we seek order. Surrounded by chaos, we spend more time and energy working to make sense of the world around us. There may not be one right way to organize, but I believe DISorganization is an obstacle to your financial, physical and mental peace.

Sweet and Saving, and my blog Noun Management are partnering to share our thoughts and tips on organization through a series of posts. Noun Management is my business which specializes is coordinating people, places and things. You can visit my website at www.nounmanagement.ca

Logo1_Squ_WhiteBkg

We fully intend to cover organization for physical spaces, your finances, and your schedule. If you have something else you’d like to hear our thoughts on, please send us a message! We would love to hear from you.

Selecting Cleaners For Your Home Part 2: Ditching the Toxins

How many of you have jumped on the toxin-free band wagon? While selecting safer products for your home is admirable, there is SO much misinformation out there thanks to Dr. Google and the plethora of products claiming to be “safe” with nothing to support their claims except for a pretty picture of a leaf on the product label. During part 2 of this blog series, we will review what to look for and avoid in your cleaning products to ensure you get what you expect to pay for.

Chemistry

When it comes to selecting non-toxic cleaners and disinfectants for your home, the first and best place to start is the chemistry. There are two main chemistries to avoid that are known to cause respiratory, skin, and eye irritation. The first chemistry is bleach (no surprise there!). A common replacement for bleach which is frequently marketed as “Bleach Free” are QUATS (Quaternary ammonium compounds). QUATS are the most common chemistry used in consumer grade cleaning products. I talked about the toxicity of Quats in Part 1 which is linked HERE if you wish you learn more.  So what chemistries do I recommend? My go to is always Hydrogen Peroxide based products. Hydrogen Peroxide is non-toxic, inherently and readily biodegradable, non-irritating, yet has the amazing capability to kill germs. You can also look for products based on natural acids like citric  or lactic acid. This is where reading your product label is essential to know what is actually in your cleaners and disinfectants!

Irrelevant Marketing Claims

All Natural, Biodegradable, and CFC Free, are just some of the marketing claims that are totally irrelevant. Let’s start with “All Natural” cleaners and disinfectants. Just because a product claims to be all natural does NOT mean that it’s safe. Chemicals such as arsenic, mercury, uranium, and formaldehyde are just some of the naturally occurring chemicals that are very toxic. My other favorite is “Biodegradable”. Did you know that EVERYTHING is biodegradable? So if something takes 1000 years to degrade, “biodegradable” could still be on the product label. What you want is a product that quickly degrades which can be identified with the relevant claims “readily biodegradable” or “inherently biodegradable” which are more specific to the actual time frame of biodegradability. Finally, if you’ve bought a product because it claims to be CFC Free, jokes on you because CFCs have been banned for over 30 years so NO product contains CFCs.

Scents

Is there anything better than the smell of a clean house? What clean scent is your favorite? Lemon? Lavender? Did you know that the smell of clean should be no smell at all? Most scents used in cleaning products are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which negatively impact indoor air quality and can be irritating to the lungs. Instead, opt for scent free products. You will know your house is clean when you can smell… NOTHING!

Read the Fine Print

You would not believe how many “green” and “non-toxic” cleaning products actually have warning symbols/statements in the fine print on the label. The most common warning statements are skin, eye, and respiratory irritation. Again, READ your product label to ensure you aren’t getting tricked by that pretty green leaf on the front label.

Dilutions

Concentrated cleaning products are a great way to save money, but how many of you just pour in your disinfectant without reading what dilution should be used? Properly diluting your concentrates ensures two things. 1. Proper dilutions ensure you are using the correct amount of chemical to effectively clean, kill germs, and protect your surfaces. 2. Proper dilutions help maintain the safety profile of the product. If you are over diluting you are making the solution stronger than it needs to be which could negatively impact the safety profile.

So whats the moral of the story? READ THE PRODUCT LABEL, YES ALL OF IT!

Liv

How to Make Your Wardrobe Go Further: The Basic Tee

How many times have you looked in your closet full of clothes and thought… I have NOTHING to wear?! This happens to me ALL the time. Usually, it takes hours of playing dress up in my closet for me to realize that I have MORE than enough clothes and that I can create endless looks with just the basics. Today on Sweet and Saving, I’m going to show you how to dress up a basic white t-shirt and create a number of different looks with this basic item that I know you all have.

Knot It

My new favorite t-shirt trend is to knot my tee at the front. It gives a looser fitting t-shirt some shape and looks amazing with a pair of high rise denim (I especially love the distressed look).

How to Style a Basic Tee

How to Style a Basic Tee

Add Some Bling

The easiest way to dress up a basic tee is to add some bling! Adding a statement necklace, or bold tassel earrings can take your tee from casual weekend to night out on the town in a matter of seconds with no effort. For V-necks choose a statement necklace with a v-shaped pendant and for crew neck, choose shorter pendants with volume.

Dress Down Your Work Wear

You can dress up your t-shirt, while simultaneously dressing down your work wear by combining your favorite tee with your go-to work bottoms (skirt or dress pants). It’s the perfect GNO or date night outfit. And heck, if your office is casual enough, rock it at work too!

How to Style a Basic Tee

Add a Blazer

This is probably my favorite look for spring. Blazers are like magic.  They are a perfect layering piece and they so perfectly add sass to any item in your closet.

Wear Heels

Again, this is sooo easy! Wear your favorite pair of heels with your white t-shirt and denim and watch the magic happen. With the simple addition of heels you can turn your casual t-shirt and jeans that you wore grocery shopping into a fabulous head-turning outfit with again, no effort.

How to style a basic teeAs you can see, it’s SO easy to take your basic tee from zero to hero. I’ve linked some of my favorite t-shirts that are all under $20!

When it comes to fashion, I LOVE outfits that offer versatility. I like to choose pieces that can be worn to work, date night, girls night out, yet are casual enough to rock on the weekend. That’s why I adore this outfit by Jaime Shrayber. It’s clean, sleek, and just my taste.

This look, while absolutely adorable, costs $177.00 (not including the earrings).

Tie up blouse – $106.47

Clutch – $26.00

Denim – $45.00

Tassel earrings – (sold out)

I’ve managed to replicate this look (including the earrings!) for only $103.00, that’s a savings of $74.00! I’ve included the cost of the original clutch because it’s SO reasonable and I love anything and everything with pompoms. But for those of you who have not jumped on the pompom band wagon, I’ve included a similar version (pompom free) for only $35.00.
